Electronics Recycling in New York

Two years after New York introduced new legislation governing the disposal of electronics, the state has reported a marked increase in the amount of e-waste that has been recycled.

The law, called the NY State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, mandated that manufactures establish systems for the collection of the electronics that they produce beginning in 2011. The final phase of the law is set to take effect on January 1, 2015, at which time it will become illegal for any individual in New York to improperly dispose of any electronics.

Already, the state has seen an 80 percent increase in electronic scrap collection sites, but the state’s residents produce more than 300 million pounds of e-waste over the course of a year and Scott Cassel, CEO of the Product Stewardship Institute, a nonprofit focused on minimizing the environmental impact of consumer products, believes that there is still much work to be done.

To Be Effective, Recycling Needs to Be Easy

Among the holes identified by Cassel, one of the largest is ease of participation. “You can’t tell residents to recycle if it’s going to be inconvenient for them,” he explained, and large retailers like Walmart and Sears have yet to implement recycling options for their products.

What the legislation has done, however, is generate awareness of the importance of properly recycling electronics and push companies to institute effective recycling programs. While the changes made in response to the legislation are certainly a step in the right direction, there is still a long way to go before electronic scrap recycling in New York is as efficient as it needs to be.
