The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. Considered to be the birth of the modern environmental movement, the events of that day were sparked by then-U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson’s disdain for the detrimental effects of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. He capitalized on the passion behind the student antiwar movement and set out to channel that energy toward an environmental cause.
An estimated 20 million Americans rallied in support of the environment that day, and it resulted in rare political action. The Environmental Protection Agency was established on December 2, 1970, and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts were subsequently passed.
Now, Earth day is celebrated in almost 200 countries around the world. April 22 has become a day for everyone to unite in support of protecting the environment that we all share.
